As per immigration policy, registered international and exchange students who are in full-time studies and hold a study permit are permitted to work on campus without requiring a work permit. That includes all campus departments and businesses that are physically located on the campus.
Campus departments or businesses interested in hiring an international student will need to provide the student with a “Job Contract” for the student to extend or apply for a new Social Insurance Number.
Please go to the following Human Resources and Social Development Canada website for details that must be included in the contract (including a sample contract):

International Student Employment Program (ISEP)
Program Overview
The International Student Employment Program (ISEP) provides part-time employment opportunities for full time international undergraduate students at York. While York International administers the program, positions are offered at cooperating York departments and units across the York campus.
Departments whose positions are approved are eligible to receive grants of 75% of the position's total salary, up to $1500.
How departments apply to participate
Units apply for funding by completing an ISEP application - Contact Zuzana Chovancova at zuzanac@yorku.ca to obtain an application form.
The deadline for Fall/Winter 2011-12 ISEP positions is July 22, 2011.
Please note that if you had a previous position in this program, you will still need to re-apply.
General Guidelines
The following general points should be kept in mind when submitting proposals:
- Preference will be given to positions with an international education focus and those that capitalize on the international experience/expertise of the student.
- Jobs may be varied in nature (administrative, research, cataloguing, etc). Career related positions are encouraged.
- All jobs must be available on campus and be flexible in hours to fit students' academic schedules.
- Conditions and limitations of employment are governed by general university policies and by collective agreements.
- The hourly pay rate for International Student Work Study Program positions must be at least at the minimum hourly wage rate ($10.25/ hour as of March 31, 2010) plus 4% vacation pay. Hourly rates above this minimum are acceptable and should be set according to the nature of the job. ($10.25 to $15.00 per hour is average at York).
- A condition of funding is that units hire a student who has been approved as an eligible student by York International. The student will have met the following criteria:
- Registered as a full-time international student in Fall/Winter 2010-2011 (in at least 18 credits)
- Is not an exchange student
- Is not a graduate student
- Is not holding another position in this program
- Holds a valid Study Permit
A few final notes
- Approved positions will be given an official job number.
- Positions which are not approved will be put on a wait list. If any positions become available prior to or during the program, wait list applications will be contacted.
