Once your final grades are released you have 90 days to apply for your post-graduation work permit (PGWP). The date of your graduation ceremony (convocation) has no relevance to your post-graduation work permit application. The release of final grades generally occurs in early/mid May, September and January. You do not need a job offer to apply for a post-graduation work permit. Also, you must have a valid study permit when you apply for a PGWP.
The duration for which the PGWP is issued depends on the actual length of the program and not on how long it takes you to complete it. If your program is 2 years or longer you may be eligible to receive a PGWP valid up to 3 years. If the duration of your program is less than 2 years but more than 8 months you may be eligible to receive a PGWP valid up to the duration of your program.
York International hosts Graduating Seminars where all of your graduation and post-graduation work permit questions can be answered.
Graduating International Student Seminar
Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from 13:30-16:00 in 280N York Lanes.
If you are graduating within the next year, it is highly recommended that you attend this session prior to your graduation. This session will explain how to apply for the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) and other issues related to after-graduation employment.
How to Apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit
- You will need to obtain a status letter from the Registrar Office (Bennett Centre for Student Services) which states that you have completed your degree requirements. This letter cannot be picked up until your grades have been released and an audit has been done. A letter stating that you are eligible to graduate is NOT sufficient.
- Create a MYCIC account and apply for the Post-Graduation work permit (if you don’t currently have one). It will ask you for a Client ID. This eight-digit number is located on your study permit.
- As part of the application you will need to scan and upload your status letter and passport pages and pay a $150 fee.
- Check current processing times.
NOTE: Summer and December graduates, must have their audit expedited in order to receive a letter from the Registrar’s Office that you have completed all your degree requirements. This is because audits are generally done in May and you only have 90 days to apply for your PGWP after your final grades are released. See next section for instructions on how to expedite your audit.
How to Expedite the Audit
Did you finish your degree requirements in December 2013 and do you want to apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
If yes, you must expedite your degree audit before you can apply for a PGWP.
You only have 90 days from the time that your grades are released to apply for a PGWP, therefore you must have your degree audit expedited in January/February. If you do not expedite your audit you will not be able to receive a letter that states you completed your degree requirements from the Registrar's office. This letter is needed to apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit
Step #1: Complete and print the "Letter and Document Verification Request" form at: http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/program/letters/ (Scroll down to #3 on that form)
Check off "eligible to graduate" box under Customized letters-there is a $50 fee for this letter. NOTE: Make sure that you have already applied to graduate at the following link: http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad/preparing/ (Deadline Date to apply to graduate is January 31, 2014)
Step #2: On the top of the form write "International Student-Applying for Post Graduation Work Permit" - Please Expedite," this will enable the Registrar Office to prioritize your request.
Step #3: Drop off the form at the Bennett Centre for Student Services - Registrar Office drop box on the main floor.
Step #4: In early February you should receive an email from the Registrar's Office that your letter is available for pick up or you can ask them to mail it to you.
Step #5: Once you have received the letter from the Registrar's Office stating that you have completed all your degree requirements, you can apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit through the CIC website http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad-how.asp
This does not apply to students who are enrolled in winter courses and will be finishing their degree requirements in April and convocating in June.
