York has a mandatory health insurance plan for all international students, called the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). There are also several supplementary health plans that cover medical expenses not covered by UHIP such as prescription drugs.

YFS Health Plan - The York Federation of Students (YFS) Health Plan offers supplemental health care coverage for undergraduate students (excluding students studying at Atkinson College). Benefits include prescription drugs. Every eligible student is automatically charged for the YFS health plan on their student account at the beginning of the school year in September.

GSA Health Plan - The Graduate Student Association (GSA) Health Plan offers supplemental health coverage for full-time graduate students who are not part of the CUPE 3903 Union. Benefits include coverage for vision care, dental coverage, and prescription drugs. Note: Members of the CUPE 3903 Union may not have coverage for their first four months at York. There is an option to opt into the GSA Health Plan for four months by filling out a form at the GSA office and paying an additional premium. Follow link for full details.

CUPE 3903 Health Plan - The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 3903 Health Plan offers supplemental coverage for graduate students who are members of the CUPE 3903 Union. Benefits include prescription drugs, vision care and dental coverage. Students must wait a four month waiting period during their first year working at York before being covered by this plan - the GSA Health Plan described above may be used as an alternative during the waiting period. You should receive an enrolment package from York a few weeks before you become eligible for coverage. If your contract begins in September, you must fill out your enrolment form and return it to the address provided so that your coverage can begin in January. If you do not receive an enrolment package, contact the CUPE office.
